Technical Dialogue on Early Warning Systems for Africa
This dialogue will convene governments, regional bodies, and partners to share lessons and innovations for scaling Early Warning Systems across the continent.
Mandated Event at the Second Africa Climate Summit
Africa faces growing risks from climate, natural, and human-induced hazards such as droughts, floods, conflicts, and disease outbreaks. Early Warning Systems are vital to reducing disaster impacts and preventing escalation, but gaps in coverage, connectivity, technical capacity, and coordination limit their effectiveness.
World Resources Institute (WRI), African Union Commission (AUC), Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission, and partners, including UNDRR, IFRC, and World Meteorological Organization, are working to strengthen Africa’s multi-hazard early warning capacity through initiatives such as the Africa Multi-hazard Early Warning and Action System (AMHEWAS).
This dialogue will convene governments, regional bodies, and partners to share lessons and innovations for scaling Early Warning Systems across the continent. Discussions will focus on improving data sharing, last-mile dissemination, and cross-sector integration, while linking early warning outputs to anticipatory action and risk management. The event aims to build collective momentum for stronger, more effective early warning systems that safeguard communities and enhance resilience.
