RELEASE: WRI Africa appoints Bora Masumbuko as Country Manager for the Democratic Republic of Congo
NAIROBI, KENYA (February 10, 2025) — World Resources Institute, Africa, is pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Bora Masumbuko as Country Manager for the Democratic Republic of Congo, a position she assumed on December 1, 2024.
In this role, Bora coordinates WRI’s activities and drives the Country’s programmatic strategy to support and advance the organization’s goals and mission, and DRC’s transition towards economic sustainability. To achieve this, she works with government and non-government actors at the intersection between nature conservation, economic development, and resilient societies and communities.
“Supporting the growth of robust, sustainable, community-led economic opportunities across the Congo Basin is a critical mission for WRI and our many partners throughout the region, so we are thrilled to have Bora at the helm, steering our strategy in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” said Rebekah Shirley, Deputy Director for WRI Africa. “With her wealth of expertise in natural resource governance, policy, and management, Bora is uniquely positioned to lead impactful change. Her deep experience in developing tools and approaches to enhance the resilience of tropical ecosystems to climate change is crucial for success. We congratulate Bora and look forward to working with her in this new journey.”
Bora is an environmental and biodiversity conservation specialist with over 20 years of experience working on national, regional, and global issues about ecosystem restoration, land use, and policy.
Before joining WRI, Bora worked with the International Union for Conservation of Nature for several years in different focus areas, where she led regional and global programmes to promote nature-based solutions to advance ecosystem sustainability and resilience to climate change. Prior to that, Bora held positions in diverse institutions to advance biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability in Africa.
Bora holds an MSc in Agricultural Sciences and Biological Engineering from the Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (University of Liege) in Belgium and a BSc in Populations and Ecosystems Biology from the University of Lille in France.
“The Democratic Republic of Congo presents immense opportunities to accelerate transition to sustainable food, land and water systems, clean energy and urban resilience,” said Bora Masumbuko. I am privileged to step into this new role and serve WRI in advancing these transitions with all stakeholders, partners, and our dedicated team of experts across DRC, Africa, and worldwide. I am excited for the journey ahead and look forward to driving successes, learning, and making a positive impact for people, nature, and climate.”
