Ethiopia's Green Legacy: From Billions Planted to Sustainable Futures
This high-level side event, hosted by WRI, will spotlight Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative —a bold, African-led response to climate and environmental challenges
Mandated Event at the Second Africa Climate Summit
Since 2019, the Green Legacy Initiative has mobilized communities to plant more than 40 billion seedlings, with a target of 54 billion by 2026. As Ethiopia approaches this milestone, the discussion will shift to the next phase: ensuring seedlings mature into healthy, lasting forests through stronger policy, institutional, financial, and technological support.
The session will highlight Ethiopia’s innovative financing model—allocating 0.5–1% of federal revenue to a national restoration fund—and explore how partnerships can scale its impact. By showcasing community action, inclusive governance, and sustainable investment approaches, the event will demonstrate how African-led initiatives can unlock climate finance, strengthen resilience, and inspire other countries to adopt similar national strategies for nature-based climate solutions.
