Elevating Informal Systems in Africa’s Climate and Economic Transition
Exploring how integrating the informal sector into national climate commitments can deliver more inclusive and effective action.
Room M9
Informal settlements, transport, and economies are central to daily life in African cities—shaping services, emissions, and climate vulnerability. Yet, they remain largely absent from climate policy, finance, and planning frameworks, including most Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans and National Urbanization Plans.
This session explores how integrating the informal sector into national climate commitments can drive more inclusive and effective action. Featuring voices from local governments, grassroots networks, and national leaders, the event will highlight opportunities to embed informality into climate and development plans for stronger, grounded outcomes.
